IASTM
Restore Movement and Support Faster Recovery
Some soft tissue restrictions are too stubborn for hands alone. That is where IASTM therapy comes in. At Baysictechnique Physiotherapy in Mount Druitt, we use instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation to reduce pain, improve mobility and speed up recovery from soft tissue injuries.
Precision-designed stainless steel instruments let our physios target muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia with an accuracy that fingertips cannot always match.
We use IASTM with office workers whose forearms and necks have tightened over years at a desk, athletes with old scar tissue from past injuries, and clients across Mount Druitt and Western Sydney whose movement has never felt right since a surgery or strain.
What Is IASTM Therapy?
IASTM therapy is an advanced manual technique where specially designed stainless steel instruments are glided over the skin to find and treat areas of soft tissue restriction. The instruments amplify what the physio can feel, so scarred, thickened or adhered tissue shows up clearly under the tool.
Treating those areas stimulates blood flow, improves tissue mobility, helps break down scar tissue and adhesions, and encourages the body’s natural healing response.
What IASTM Helps With
Clients see us for IASTM when dealing with persistent muscle tension, restricted flexibility and range of motion, scar tissue after injury or surgery, and movement patterns that have never quite returned to normal. The treatment supports circulation, tissue healing and the restoration of normal movement.
Like most soft tissue work, IASTM performs best in company. We routinely combine it with
exercise rehabilitation,
massage therapy or
dry needling, depending on what your assessment shows.
What a Session Feels Like
Your physio applies the instrument along the affected tissue with controlled pressure. You may feel a gritty or bumpy sensation as the tool passes over restricted areas, and that is actually useful feedback, it tells us exactly where the problem lives. Mild redness or tenderness afterwards is common and settles quickly.
Every session at our Mount Druitt clinic starts with assessment and ends with a plan, because releasing tissue is only half the job. Keeping it moving well is the other half.
Expect the benefits to build across sessions rather than land all at once. Tissue that has been restricted for months rarely releases in one visit, but most clients feel movement improving within the first few treatments, especially when they do the exercises between them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IASTM hurt?
You will feel firm pressure and sometimes a gritty sensation over restricted tissue. It can be briefly uncomfortable over tender spots, but your physio adjusts the pressure, and mild soreness afterwards settles within a day.
Is IASTM the same as scraping or gua sha?
The tools look similar, but IASTM is a clinical technique performed by qualified physiotherapists based on assessment findings, and it is integrated into a structured rehabilitation plan.
How many IASTM sessions will I need?
It varies with the condition and how long the restriction has been there. Many clients notice improved movement within a few sessions, and your physio will give you an honest estimate upfront.
Can IASTM be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it usually is. IASTM pairs well with massage, dry needling and exercise rehabilitation in the same treatment plan, with your physio sequencing them for the best result.
