Jaw Pain

Chew, Yawn and Talk Without Thinking About Your Jaw

You never notice how much your jaw does until it hurts. Jaw pain turns eating, yawning, talking and even sleeping into things you brace for, and clicking around the jaw can make every meal feel like a warning. At Baysictechnique Physiotherapy in Mount Druitt, our physios assess and treat jaw pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems with the same careful, hands-on approach we bring to every other joint in the body.

Physiotherapy is one of the most effective first-line treatments for most jaw problems, and far fewer people know that than should.

Jaw Problems We Treat

The jaw complaints we see most include temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), clicking or popping around the jaw, pain in the jaw while yawning or opening wide, jaw pain while chewing, jaw locking or catching, muscle-related jaw tension from clenching and grinding, and jaw pain that travels with neck pain and headaches.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits just in front of each ear and works thousands of times a day. Like any hard-working joint, its muscles, disc and joint surfaces can become irritated, and each of those problems needs slightly different care.

How Our Physios Treat Jaw Pain

Treatment starts with working out where your jaw pain actually comes from: the joint itself, the chewing muscles, the neck, or a habit like clenching. From there, care may combine gentle hands-on treatment for the jaw and surrounding muscles, dry needling for tight jaw and neck muscles, massage, and specific exercises that retrain how your jaw opens and closes.

Because the neck and jaw work as a team, we routinely treat both together, and stubborn jaw pain often improves fastest when the neck stops feeding it.

Habits, Clenching and the Long Game

A lot of jaw pain is maintained by habits nobody notices: daytime clenching at a screen, night grinding, nail biting, or always chewing on one side. Part of your treatment is spotting these patterns and giving you practical ways to unload the joint, because hands-on treatment alone rarely holds if the jaw keeps getting overworked between sessions.

If your dentist has raised grinding or recommended a splint, physiotherapy works well alongside that advice, and we are happy to coordinate care for clients across Mount Druitt and Western Sydney.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is jaw clicking something to worry about?
Painless clicking is common and often harmless. Clicking with pain, locking or limited opening is worth assessing, as early treatment usually prevents it progressing.
Why does my jaw hurt when I chew or yawn?
Pain with chewing or wide opening usually points to the TMJ or the chewing muscles being irritated or overloaded. Assessment identifies which, and treatment is targeted accordingly.
What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?
TMJ is the joint itself, the temporomandibular joint. TMD means temporomandibular dysfunction, the umbrella term for problems with that joint and its muscles. Physiotherapy treats TMD.
Can physio really help jaw pain?
Yes. Physiotherapy is a well-supported first-line treatment for most TMD, using hands-on techniques, exercises and habit changes. Many clients notice easier opening and less pain within the first few sessions.
Do I need a referral to have my jaw treated?
No referral is needed for private appointments at our Mount Druitt clinic. If your dentist or GP referred you, bring any notes along and we will build on them.
